Seth Murphy, a native of Rock Hill, South Carolina, returns to the Blue Stars for his third year, and as Assistant Caption Head of the brass program in 2011. Seth started his marching career in 2000 with the Carolina Crown. He marched contrabass, baritone, and euphonium for four years (2000, '03-'05) during the building process of what is now a brass powerhouse for Crown. After ageing-out, Seth spent two years as a brass instructor with Crown, teaching and learning along side many great brass instructors and music educators alike. After the summer of 2007, he moved into a performance role with the cast of Blast! as a euphonium soloist, trombonist, and marching snare drummer. Immediately following the closing of his last show with the Tony and Emmy award-winning show in 2008, Seth decided to seek out a drum corps to assume an educational position with, and found a home with the Blue Stars and it's wonderful background and educational staff. Seth received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, and is currently pursuing his Music Education Credential from Azusa Pacific University in Asuza, CA. Seth's background in music education goes back to teaching at many high schools in North and South Carolina such as Nation Ford H.S. (Fort Mill, SC), Northwestern H.S. and Rock Hill H.S. (Rock Hill, SC), as well as Ardrey Kell H.S., Charlotte Latin H.S., and Lake Norman Charter School (Charlotte, NC). He had as many as 20 private students at one time in his low brass studio for several years, and has been a consultant and instructor for the marching band season and concert band season with many of the schools listed. Seth now resides in Southern California in Monrovia, CA, where he teaches at Arcadia High School. The band at Arcadia is comprised of over 400 students, with over 100 students as brass players. He assists the two band directors and helps instruct the brass program, as well as consulting with entire musical program year round. Seth hopes to assume a more important role when he has completed the Music Education Credential program in the Spring of 2012. "I am very pleased with the progress the Blue Stars have made in the past three years. I look forward to this season and the amount of growth we can achieve yet again with our brass program, and as a drum corps. I have the privilege of teaching with and learning from some of the best music educators in the business, which makes every rehearsal something special to me. 2011 is sure to be an unbelievable year for the Blue Stars!" |
